My First Take Off

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

Sitting on a flight was one of my childhood dreams. And taking off was far beyond my imagination.

From making paper planes to learning about aeroplanes as transportation was something I did during my school days. But never thought I would experience and write about it for you one day.

It was the summer of 2007, and I, as a child, was in utter surprise when my family told me that I would be flying to the city of beaches called Goa. It is a tiny emerald land located on the west coast of India. Of course, I was thrilled to know this and started packing for the trip.

But WAIT!

Before going further, let me take you to the time when it was planned; FLASHBACK 2007.

It was mid of April, and my elder sister and brother were planning some ideas to surprise our parents on their 25th anniversary. So yeah, it was a special year! Wohooo..

From planning to book a banquet and throwing a party with all family & friends to having just a small family dinner, they finally decided to book a seven days trip to Goa. It took a lot of time & effort on their part. All thanks to bhaiya and di. Tickets got booked, the hotel got booked, and an itinerary was made explaining each day's activities. Everything went according to plan.

End of April, it was finally the time to reveal the surprise (coz we had to, so mamma papa could do all the packing). So we showed them the itinerary and tickets, told them to start packing, and handed out our shopping lists, lol.. coz why not?

It was obvious that it was a trip for two. But, as I was the youngest one, mamma papa both wanted me to go with them, and ofc I couldn't say "No" :p. This shocked my bhaiya di because they did all the "mehnat," and I got to go, haha. They booked my tickets and hotel at a higher price than mom and dad's because everything was last minute. I started packing and was super-duper excited about my first takeoff.

It was the final day, and we were at the airport. Everything went as planned. We reached early and did the check-ins. It was my first, but not my father's; he was (and still is) a travel freak. So he handled everything smoothly.

It is time to board, and my heart goes, "dhak-dhak-dhak-dhak." I had alot going in my head, like, what if the airplane fell? What if the pilot is a newcomer? What if I puke on my clothes? All this thinking and worrying lasted until we finally took off.

I held the armrest too tight because I got those butterflies in my stomach with a lil tickling, which was unbearable. Also, I had to cover my ears with cotton balls to ward off in-flight ear pains. With all this, I was messing up things and trying to calm down and take a good nap. After a while, it was time for the touchdown. I was awake and told to fasten my seat belt. The houses looked way too small from above, and it was a view I always wanted to see from the top. I was glad I flew for the first time. We finally landed and I felt relieved. I thanked the crew members and got down. It was a memorable journey, and I am experiencing more takeoffs each passing year with the same amount of butterflies in my stomach.

But the most memorable one was while returning from Goa to Delhi (more like a nightmare for me).

As this one's getting longer and I have no pictures of my trip coz I had no mobile, I will continue the rest in my next blog.

So, PART 2 is finally up, give it a read!
