My First Take Off

Updated: Mar 24

Sitting on a flight had always been one of my childhood dreams, but actually taking off? That was beyond my imagination.

From making paper planes in school to learning about airplanes as a mode of transport, I never thought I’d one day experience it for real—let alone write about it.

It was the summer of 2007 when my family surprised me with the news that I’d be flying to Goa, the city of beaches. A tiny emerald paradise on the west coast of India. The moment I heard this, I was over the moon and immediately started packing.

But WAIT! Let’s rewind to when it all began…

Flashback to 2007

It was mid-April, and my elder sister and brother were brainstorming ways to surprise our parents for their 25th anniversary. A special year indeed—wohooo! 🎉

From booking a banquet hall for a grand celebration to planning an intimate family dinner, they considered every possible option. Finally, after much deliberation, they decided on something even better—a seven-day trip to Goa!

The planning took a lot of effort. All thanks to bhaiya and di, who managed everything—booking flights, finalizing hotels, and crafting a detailed itinerary.

The Big Reveal!

By the end of April, it was time to finally break the news—because, of course, mamma and papa needed to pack! We handed them the itinerary and tickets, asked them to start packing, and... slid in our shopping lists, because why not? 😆

Since it was an anniversary trip, the plan was just for the two of them. But guess what? I got lucky! Being the youngest, both mamma and papa wanted me to come along—and obviously, I couldn’t say no. :P

Bhaiya and di were shook—after all, they did all the hard work, and I was the one flying! 🤭 Since my addition to the trip was last minute, my tickets and hotel booking ended up being way more expensive than theirs. But who’s complaining? I was going on my first flight! ✈️

The Day of the Flight

The long-awaited day finally arrived. We reached the airport well in advance, completed all check-in formalities, and everything went smoothly.

It was my first time flying, but not my father’s—he was (and still is) an absolute travel freak. Thankfully, he handled everything like a pro while I soaked in every single moment of this dream-come-true experience.

The Takeoff: A Rollercoaster of Emotions

It was finally time to board, and my heart went, "dhak-dhak-dhak-dhak." I had a thousand thoughts racing through my mind— What if the airplane falls? What if the pilot is a newbie? What if I end up puking on my clothes? The overthinking and worrying continued... until we finally took off.

I gripped the armrest way too tight because those butterflies in my stomach were next-level—mixed with a ticklish feeling that was almost unbearable. To top it off, I stuffed my ears with cotton balls to keep away in-flight ear pain. With all this happening, I was messing things up, trying to calm myself down while also attempting to take a nap.

Before I knew it, it was time for touchdown. I was awake and instructed to fasten my seatbelt. Looking out the window, I saw tiny houses below—it was a view I had always dreamt of seeing from above. In that moment, I felt grateful. I had finally flown for the first time.

We landed safely, and I let out a sigh of relief. I thanked the crew and stepped off the plane. It was truly a memorable experience, and now, with each passing year, I find myself experiencing more takeoffs—each one still giving me the same butterflies.

The Unexpected Nightmare

But if you think this was my most memorable flight, think again. The real rollercoaster ride happened on my return flight from Goa to Delhi—more like a nightmare for me. 😬

Since this post is already getting long (and I have zero pictures from the trip because, well, I had no mobile back then 😭), I’ll save that story for my next blog!

So, PART 2 is finally up—go give it a read! 😉
