Thrills, Spills, and a Lost Phone: Baku Adventures Continue!

Updated: 5 days ago

Welcome back! After sharing the start of my adventure in Part 1, here we are on Day 3, with so much more to explore. Let’s say the journey only gets more interesting from here...

Day 3:

Woke up and got ready in a cute, colorful dress, perfect for the day ahead. I had to rush through breakfast since I was running a bit late—barely had time to eat before grabbing a few yogurts for the road.

Our destination? Qobustan, a historic municipality in Azerbaijan. Our first stop was the famous Gobustan Rock Art site, which feels like a window into ancient times. The carvings here showcase everything from flora and fauna to scenes of hunting, dance rituals, men-wielding lances, animal fights, camel caravans, and even illustrations of the sun and stars. So much history to take in!

It was incredibly windy, with the sun beating down—thankfully, I’d packed an umbrella. But between the gusty wind and rocky paths, holding onto it was a workout! At least I managed to get some fantastic candid shots here. Although I wasn’t exactly prepared for the rocky terrain in flats (and I had no idea we’d be walking this much), we spent about an hour exploring and absorbing the ancient stories etched into the stones.

After soaking up the ancient history at Gobustan, it was time for an off-road adventure to the mud volcanoes in a vintage Lada 2107. Picture Dubai’s desert safari but on rough, bumpy terrain! My parents and I were hanging on tight as we sped through the landscape, wind whipping in through the windows. A thrilling (and slightly nerve-wracking!) 20 minutes later, we reached the volcanoes—windy, muddy, and strangely beautiful. These “mud mountains” were bubbling mud volcanoes and everyone in the group was filling bottles with mud, famous for its pain-relief properties.

After snapping photos and exploring, we headed to Nizami Street’s Fountain Square for lunch—a charming spot with shops, restaurants, and vendors. With our energy recharged, we moved on to the Carpet Museum (photo-op from the outside!), Little Venice for a boat ride, and finally the Baku Funicular, where we caught a stunning view of the Flame Towers lit up against the night sky.

By the time we returned to the hotel, I could barely feel my feet. Day 3 was packed, but every moment was worth it!

Day 4:

After breakfast, we set out for the Candy Cane Mountains. After a 1.5-hour ride, we arrived, but the colors weren’t as bright as expected; the mountains looked faded under the harsh sun. I quickly snapped a few photos and rushed back to the bus after just 10 minutes.

Next, we had a 3.5-hour drive to our next adventure: a cable car ride, Qabala. But, feeling adventurous, I and nine others decided to try the coaster instead. We paired up to balance the weight and began our slow climb, letting us capture the scenery without worry. At first, we regretted not taking the cable car, but once at the top, the view was worth it.

When it was time to head back, I was given a lever to hold, with a warning that this ride would be much faster. I handed my phone to the person in front, thinking she’d capture some shots. But just 10 seconds in, I saw my phone fly out of her lap and tumble down the mountain! I pulled the lever to stop, shouting for help and signalling to people stationed nearby to search for it. After a few minutes of searching with no luck, I reluctantly finished the ride, my heart racing.

At the bottom, I waited, feeling anxious and completely out of touch with no phone signal. My parents were enjoying their cable car ride, so I tried to keep calm. Then, just as I’d given up hope, someone handed my phone back to me! I was so relieved that I couldn’t hold back tears. I kept it all quiet from my parents, took a deep breath, and grabbed a potato twister snack to ease my nerves while waiting for everyone else.

We ended the day with a delicious Indian dinner and headed back, grateful for a rollercoaster of emotions—and a happy ending!

Day 5:

The last day of the trip! I got ready, checked out, and we made our way to the Atashgah Zoroastrian Fire Temple. We spent about 1.5 hours there, but with the sun blazing down, I was more focused on snapping some quick photos and heading back to the bus.

After a short drive, we reached Yanar Dag, or Burning Mountain. We took a few photos, then hopped back on the bus for lunch. Our final stop was Deniz Mall, where we had a bit of shopping time. I picked up a few gifts for my nephews and niece, grabbed a quick bite at McDonald’s, and then it was time to head to the airport.

And with that, our Baku adventure came to a close!

And that wraps up my unforgettable Baku trip! From ancient carvings and windy volcanic mud pools to heart-racing mountain coasters and blazing fire temples, this journey was nothing short of a whirlwind. Despite the ups, downs, and a bit of drama, Baku left me with memories (and some unexpected stories) that I’ll never forget.

If you’ve made it through both parts of this blog, thank you for tagging along! Whether you’re dreaming of your trip or simply here for the laughs, I hope these stories brought a little Baku magic your way. Until the next adventure!
